Dear Heritage Families,
We've had another exciting week at Heritage! On Tuesday, some Lancer Hockey players visited and read to our K–2 classrooms—a special treat that our younger students really enjoyed. On Wednesday, students participated in Badger Time, and celebrated our October Students of the Month.
One of the highlights was our Silly String the Principal incentive, which took place right after the assembly. Mrs. Hawn captured the fun on video so all students could enjoy watching it with their classmates. Other special incentives this week included Lunch with the Principal, a Fire Truck Ride to School, and the chance to be a "Specialist for the Day."
A big thank you to our PTO for generously giving their time and energy to help make this week memorable and fun for our students—we truly appreciate all you do!
Looking ahead, please remember that next week is a short week for students due to Parent/Teacher Conferences, which will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 14th and 15th. We’re excited to welcome families into the building and share the amazing growth and accomplishments your children have made so far this year.
ONE TEAM. ONE COMMITMENT.
Take care,
Ms. Woodrich
Heritage Principal

Nebraska Missing Persons’ Day- October 17th
According to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons database, more than 600,000 people go missing annually. Currently, Nebraska's stats show 86 open cases and 227 resolved cases of missing persons. At any given time, up to 100,000 persons may be reported missing in the United States, with as many as 600,000 reported annually, according to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System. Many of these individuals are found, but some become long-term missing persons. Nebraska honors Missing Persons and their families each year on October 17th. Prevention and student safety are a main focus for Bennington Public Schools. Please read the following suggestions to prevent unsafe situations.
- Always be aware of your surroundings.
- If a stranger tries to engage you in conversation, it doesn't mean you should talk to that person or forget safety rules. Immediately get away from anyone who bothers you or makes you feel uncomfortable, scared, or confused. Remember, it is OK to be impolite, walk away, or say no.
- Trust your feelings. A recent study indicates that 84% of unsuccessful abductions involved the individual doing something proactive to escape, such as walking or running away, yelling, kicking, pulling away, attracting attention, or otherwise resisting.
- Practice what to do if approached by a stranger. Common tricks used to entice individuals include offering a ride, offering the individual a treat, asking for help, asking for directions, or claiming that a parent has asked them to bring the child home because of an emergency.
- Report your routes and routines to family, so they know your location. Avoid isolated areas or try to stay in groups.
- Make online safety a priority and never give out personal information or your location to strangers.
- Report suspicious activity or friends who communicate thoughts of running away to a trusted adult or the Safe2Help Hotline.

If you plan to come visit during lunchtime, please let the office know by 9:00am if you are going to purchase a school lunch so we can prepare enough food. Lunches are $4.90 for adults, and no change can be given.
You are more than welcome to bring food from home, but please NO fast food. If you are bringing a peanut or tree nut item in your lunch, please do NOT sit at our peanut free table in the cafeteria. Thank you!

One of our goals here at Heritage is to make sure that every student has an adult that they can ask questions too, talk too and feel safe with. Students will be given a staff check in sheet with pictures of all the staff members on it. They will simply cross out the staff member that they have a connection with. If students do not have 3 or more connections we introduce students to more staff members by saying hello, making small talk or saying goodbye in the afternoon. Our goal is that every student has 3 or more staff members that they feel safe with. |
