Visitors to Bennington Middle School may have noticed three new ceramic totem sculptures welcoming them at the front of the school. The artwork was created by Mrs. Blanchard’s eighth grade pottery students last spring through a Totem Pole Grant from the Bennington Public Schools Foundation.
Local ceramic artist Judith Snyder worked alongside students, teaching them how to construct hollow ceramic forms and use the sgraffito carving technique to create their individual pieces. Special clay and glaze were used so the finished sculptures could withstand Nebraska weather. A local welder fabricated the metal supports, and two eighth grade students planned the arrangement and order of the pieces before Mrs. Blanchard installed the finished sculptures this summer.
The completed totems are a lasting example of student creativity, hands-on learning, and community collaboration. Thank you to the BPS Foundation, Judith Snyder, our community partners, Mrs. Blanchard, and her students for bringing this project to life!
